California Town Pushes Back Against Newsom- City Council Votes Unanimously to Become a ‘Non-Sanctuary City’: “If the Governor Refuses to Fulfill His Duty to Protect Californians, We Will Step Up” (Video)

Huntington Beach, California, City Council

Huntington Beach, California, is pushing against Governor Gavin Newsom’s disastrous leadership.

The City Council voted to declare Huntington Beach a “Non-Sanctuary City.”

City Council member Butch Twining said, “Public safety is proactive. Imagine what would be being talked about here tonight if, say, Laken Riley or Jocelyn (sic) Nungaray or Rachel Morin was a resident of Huntington Beach, and she got and each one of them got raped and killed by illegal aliens.”

“There would be a whole different argument going on in here by ‘why weren’t we proactive?’ And one other thing we all up here said, you know, when we take our oath of office, we we raise our hand and we swear to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States.”

Mayor Pat Burns added, “And one thing I’ll note is as a retired cop is it was always told to us, you cannot receive and accept and carry out an illegal order. If somebody told me to do something that was illegal, I don’t care if I was a rookie or a 30 year experience cop. You you weren’t exempt from breaking the law if you broke that law. And you even if it was ordered by the chief of police, you were going to be held accountable for breaking the law.”

“And this is tantamount to an illegal order. And those who obey it better be prepared, because there’s you were I was trained that you better know your stuff and you better refuse an illegal order when the time came. If you ever got one. And it’s the right thing to do. You’re not supposed to break the law, plain and simple. At any level. So, Gracie, I think you’re the closer.”

Council member Gracey Van Der Mark,Thanks, Pat. So several people came out here and said, ‘fill our potholes.’ They’re being filled. ‘Pave our streets.’ They’re being paved. Well, we like to have nice, boring meetings like many other cities. However, when we campaign, we campaign and we promise to protect the residents of Huntington Beach.”

“And unfortunately, at this point, we have to protect them from the state, from the governor and from the, thank goodness, former President Biden, because it’s no secret that harmful policies that are originated in DC and Sacramento, signed into law by Governor Newsom and former President Biden, have created significant challenges that put all California residents at risk.”

“These policies have left us with no choice but to file lawsuits and bring forward resolutions to protect the rights and well-being of the residents of Huntington Beach. Our unwavering goal is to make Huntington Beach the safest possible for our residents, businesses and visitors alike. Public safety is the most fundamental responsibility of government.”

“Unfortunately, Californians have been left vulnerable and unprotected.”

“If the governor refuses to fulfill his duty to protect Californians, we will step up and do everything, everything within our power locally to ensure the safety and security of everyone who sets foot in the city of Huntington Beach.”

“I did find it interesting that there was somebody here earlier that spoke and expressed concerns about how Huntington Beach is taking a stand against the state of California was concerning, yet showed no concern about the state of California blatantly disregarding federal laws.”

“This double standard is not only troubling, but highlights the need for local governments to step in and hold the state accountable when it overstepped its bounds. Our commitment to protecting our community remains unwavering in the face of these contradictions, and we will do everything possible to protect every single person who is within the boundaries of our city.”

Mayor Pat Burns shared the following statement:

Initiative to Declare Huntington Beach a “Non-Sanctuary City”

Today I am introducing my initiative for City Council consideration at the January 21 meeting to Declare the City of Huntington Beach a “Non-Sanctuary City for Illegal Immigration for the Prevention of Crime.” Estimates are that nearly 20 million illegal immigrants were allowed to enter the Country under the Biden administration, which has led to an increase in crime. Crime is at an unacceptable level nationwide and according to the California Department of Justice, violent crime in our State is up nearly 20% since 2018. Since the election of President Trump, our Governor has now doubled down on subverting our federal government’s enforcement of our immigration laws, and we have seen both Los Angeles and now San Diego make announcements advancing their sanctuary city policies. In fact, reports indicate that an illegal immigrant was arrested for starting at least one of the recent devastating fires in Los Angeles, and that the suspect is being shielded in California by the Sanctuary State law from the federal law enforcement agencies.

As government leaders, and as a 30-year veteran of law enforcement myself, I know our primary function is to fight crime and protect citizens, i.e., to keep them safe from crime. That means employing every possible measure and mechanism to fight and reduce crime. For this reason, I am presenting this Declaration to the City Council in hopes that my colleagues will join me in taking a stand in favor of our City by cooperating with the Trump Administration and the federal government law enforcement agencies with regard to enforcement of immigration laws in order to further combat crime. City Attorney Michael Gates supports and states, “with the recent passage of Prop 36 by an overwhelming margin, it is clear Californians are in favor of more tools to fight crime, not fewer, and they hunger for the return to law and order. As the top attorney and prosecutor in this City, I support the Mayor’s initiative to support our great police department and fight crime at all levels and by whatever means necessary and this initiative is consistent with the lawsuit we filed last week challenging the State’s unconstitutional Sanctuary law.”
