Babysitter Arrested in Las Vegas After Fatally Stabbing 3-Year-Old (VIDEO)

In a horrific incident, a Las Vegas, Nevada babysitter was arrested for allegedly stabbing and killing a three-year-old girl while the parents were not home. 

Police say that Marketta Phillips stabbed the young girl named Journei to death on Wednesday, and they do not know the motive. She is being held without bail and will appear in court on Tuesday.

Phillips has reportedly had other run-ins with law enforcement, including a recent incident where police responded to the same location where the child was stabbed to death, and Phillips was held for 72 hours for a mental health crisis.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) said in a statement that Marketta Phillips, 41, has been charged with open murder with a deadly weapon in connection to the killing of a toddler. The incident reportedly took place in an apartment at around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday while the victim’s father was at work.

According to police, Phillips stabbed the girl before fleeing the scene when her father returned home. The apartment, located in the 4200 block of Channel 10 Drive, is approximately five miles south of Downtown Las Vegas.

When Las Vegas police officers arrived on the scene, they discovered the victim with several stab wounds inside the apartment and performed life-saving measures until emergency personnel arrived.

The toddler was taken to a local hospital, where she ultimately died from her injuries. Phillips was found near the location and arrested.

“I just want to know why,” Journie’s mother, Phalan Whitson, said at the courthouse for Phillips’ first court hearing Thursday. “I just want an explanation why, and I want you to go away for a long time.”

The father, Jeremy Ross, told reporters, “I wish, I wish I’d never met this woman, you know, I wish I’d have just left her alone.”

“I came in the house 3:30. I seen her in the kitchen, like lying on her side, and there was like dried up blood, you know? And I’m thinking, I thought she was cooking and cut herself. I went to the room and stuff, and I see my baby girl right there, you know?” Ross added. He then asked Phillips, “What did you do to my child?” and called 911 as he attempted to perform lifesaving first aid on his daughter.

Reporters say that Ross and Phillips were in an “on-again, off-again relationship.”
