New York Is Drowning in Socialism — Here’s How We’re Saving It

On Saturday, August 30, the heart of New York City shook with a sound rarely heard in Washington Square Park: conservatives, independents, and even Democrats standing shoulder-to-shoulder against socialism.

Brandon Straka, founder of the #WalkAway movement, was joined by author and media personality Shamika Michelle, mayoral candidate Joseph Hernandez, social media firebrand Defender of the Republic, and myself to rally against the failed ideology that radical Democrats are now trying to force on America.

The crowd gathered in one of the most liberal corners of the country to send a message that freedom will not die quietly, even in New York.

Straka reminded New Yorkers of what the left wants people to forget—America’s greatest strength is freedom, and socialism destroys freedom wherever it spreads.

His call was a warning that conservatives, moderates, and independents must unite now or risk watching New York City fall deeper under the control of extremists.

Unity is not a choice; it is the only option if this city and country are going to survive the socialist assault.

Socialism doesn’t work. Venezuela, once the wealthiest country in South America, has collapsed after years of socialist rule. More than 76% of Venezuelans now live in extreme poverty, and over 7 million citizens have fled since 2015 according to the United Nations.

In 2018, Venezuela’s inflation rate skyrocketed above 65,000%, wiping out savings and leaving families to starve.

Cuba, another so-called socialist success story, has average monthly wages of less than $20 and continues to ration basic food and medicine.

Wherever socialism spreads, it brings collapse, scarcity, and misery. Importing these same failed policies into the United States will destroy opportunity for millions of Americans.

The rally was held in the middle of Washington Square Park, with tourists, students, and families forced to confront ideas the media refuses to show them.

New Yorkers stopped, listened, and debated in real time.

The younger crowd of college students was confronted with facts that challenged the lies they have been sold.

Gallup polling shows that 44% of Americans under 30 view socialism favorably compared to only 28% of those over 65. The rally cut directly into this vulnerable demographic with the message that inequality is not solved by making everyone equally poor.

Zohran Mamdani and his socialist allies are not fighting for progress, they are fighting for control. Their policies would gut small businesses, defund the police, and reduce an already struggling city into a hollow shell.

Nearly half of New York City’s workforce is employed by small businesses, and these businesses are already suffocating under high taxes and endless regulations. Stripping them of even more resources would destroy the backbone of the city’s economy.

The only way forward is through policies that empower families and entrepreneurs, not through government overreach that punishes success and rewards dependency.

Socialism cannot win unless people stop fighting, and conservatives in New York just showed that they are not going anywhere.

The rally sent a clear message across the city and the country: socialism has no safe harbor in America, not even in New York City.
