Former FBI Director James Comey has finally been indicted, and the reason could not be more apparent: his words and actions directly bled American taxpayers of millions of dollars.
The so-called “Russiagate” narrative, which he helped ignite, was not a harmless political distraction. Instead, it was a fraud that drained money from hardworking citizens to fund baseless investigations, including the infamous Mueller probe.
To understand the scale of the waste, it is essential to know what “Russiagate” actually was.
WATCH: James Comey INDICTED for DEFRAUDING Americans
In the months after the 2016 election, Democrats and many in the media claimed that Donald Trump’s campaign had colluded with the Russian government to win the presidency.
This claim relied heavily on the Steele dossier—an unverified opposition-research file—and on testimony and leaks from officials like Comey.
The story dominated headlines for years, pressuring Congress and the Justice Department into launching complete investigations.
Comey’s testimony and his selective leaks made the allegations appear credible.
He briefed both Congress and the president on material he knew was unverified. He signed off on surveillance warrants based on flimsy evidence.
These actions created the impression that there must have been something real behind the accusations. That impression led directly to the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
The Mueller investigation alone consumed nearly $16 million in taxpayer money.
That figure does not include the millions more spent on congressional hearings, intelligence reviews, and legal staffing.
That money could have been used to repair infrastructure, secure the border, or support veterans.
Instead, it pursued a narrative that ultimately collapsed under its own weight.
Mueller’s final report, despite two years of investigation, found no evidence that Trump or his campaign had conspired with Russia.
In other words, years of accusations and hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars were wasted on a political hoax.
The waste was not just financial. Trust in law enforcement collapsed. Careers of innocent people were destroyed. America’s enemies benefited from seeing the United States paralyzed by internal division.
The indictment of James Comey matters because accountability matters.
If ordinary Americans are punished for lying under oath or misusing funds, then the same must apply to government officials.
Comey positioned himself as a guardian of democracy, but in reality, his actions undermined it.
He spread falsehoods, weaponized federal investigations, and left taxpayers with the bill.
