Netflix is once again in the crosshairs of conservative parents and critics after controversial clips from its 2020 series, The Baby-Sitters Club, and the 2021-2024 series Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City resurfaced and went viral on social media.

The Babysitters Club reboot, rated TV-G for general audiences and clearly aimed at children, features a scene where a teenage babysitter aggressively confronts hospital staff for “misgendering” a transgender child character named Bailey.

In the episode titled “Mary Anne Saves the Day,” the character Mary Anne demands that doctors and nurses use “she/her” pronouns for Bailey, a young boy who identifies as a girl.

The scene depicts Mary Anne accusing the doctors of making the child feel “insignificant and humiliated” by not using the preferred pronouns.

Bailey is portrayed by “transgender” child actor Kai Shappley, adding to the controversy surrounding the inclusion of such themes in programming marketed to kids.

The 2021-2024 animated Strawberry Shortcake reboot, aimed at young kids, features a character strutting in a dress colored in hues associated with the transgender flag while declaring pride in living authentically.

This latest uproar comes amid a broader backlash against Netflix’s children’s content, amplified by tech mogul Elon Musk, who has posted multiple times over the last three days, urging people to cancel their accounts.

Musk has accused the streaming service of “grooming” children through shows that inject progressive agendas into family entertainment.

“Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids,” Musk wrote in one of the posts.

Musk’s targeting of the platform began after a clip from Dead End: Paranormal Park went viral.

The show’s creator, Hamish Steele, escalated the drama with a profanity-filled rant on social media, calling conservative activist Charlie Kirk a “Nazi.”

Just days earlier, a teenage lesbian kiss scene from the 2022 animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous also resurfaced, drawing international scrutiny. In Hungary, regulators investigated Netflix in 2022 over the episode for violating laws against exposing minors to LGBT content, as the show was rated suitable for children as young as seven.

Netflix has yet to issue a public response to the latest backlash, but the mounting pressure from subscribers and regulators could force the company to reconsider its programming choices.

Netflix’s stock price (NFLX) has dropped since Musk’s announcement. The post was made before the market opened on October 1, when the stock opened at approximately $1,175.49. It closed at $1,170.90, then $1,162.53 on October 2, and as of midday on October 3, it was trading at $1,158.84.

Overall, there has been a net decline of about 1.4% in Netflix stock.

The drop is likely to continue as conservatives begin to vote with their wallets on content.
