Oxford Union’s DEI President Who Celebrated Charlie Kirk’s Assassination is Finally Removed From Office

George Abaraonye

The incoming president of the Oxford Union, George Abaraonye, has finally been removed from office.

Abaraonye, who was supposed to lead the Union through this academic year, had celebrated the assassination of Charlie Kirk, using the phrase “Let’s fucking go” after he was killed.

Following widespread pressure to step down from the role, Abaraonye submitted a motion of no confidence in himself with the hope of receiving a fresh mandate.

He has repeatedly claimed that the efforts to remove him are motivated solely by racism.

Posting on social media before the vote, Abaraonye argued that victory would show “true accountability and (reaffirm) that the Oxford Union must remain a place where students can make mistakes, apologise sincerely, and learn from them”.

He continued:

Today is your opportunity to affirm Free Speech, to stand against the racism of the Far Right, and to stand up for the principles the Union has championed for 200 years.

Two centuries later, the same people who claim to believe in the Union are now acting in stark opposition to the Union’s founding principles, by supporting a campaign of harassment, censorship, and abuse. We will not be silenced.

Some members have raised genuine concerns and done so respectfully. I am deeply grateful to those who reached out, met with me, and engaged in honest reflection.

But their reasoned voices have been drowned out by bad-faith actors who have twisted my words, clipped my speeches, and fabricated intent to fit a pre-written narrative.

However, Abaraonye’s words fell on deaf ears after a member’s plebiscite reached the two-thirds majority in order to secure his removal.

After his comments went viral, it emerged that Abaraonye was a beneficiary of a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) scheme.

He achieved grades of two A’s and a B in the British A-Level system, which is well below the standard typically required by Oxford applicants.

In fact, many students get grades up to and including three A stars and are still not accepted into the prestigious institution.
