Democrats have now reached the point where supporting American manufacturing, protecting U.S. industries, and standing up to China are somehow “unlawful.”
Outside the Supreme Court this week, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen delivered a remarkable speech attacking President Donald Trump’s tariff strategy—one that presidents from both parties have used for decades to defend American economic interests.
Her argument boiled down to this: tariffs are unconstitutional, harmful, and should be struck down immediately, even if foreign competitors benefit.
Shaheen spoke alongside several Democrat colleagues as the Court heard arguments on whether Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs on adversarial nations violated the law.
But her remarks revealed a broader ideological position: the Democrat Party now opposes tariffs not because they are ineffective, but because Trump used them to rebuild American industry.
In her statement, Shaheen claimed Trump “never came to Congress” before imposing tariffs under IEEPA, insisting the statute “doesn’t mention tariffs once.”
However, for decades, presidents have issued tariffs through this exact type of executive authority, particularly when foreign nations manipulate markets, abuse trade agreements, or threaten U.S. supply chains.
Democrats never protested when President Obama used unilateral trade actions.
They never objected when Presidents Clinton, Bush, and even Reagan used similar tools.
The sudden outrage only emerged when Trump used the same powers to confront China’s predatory trade practices.
Shaheen also claimed Americans were paying “$1,800 more on average” because of tariffs and cited selective anecdotes about businesses unable to find investors.
These arguments ignore the reality: Trump’s tariffs are designed to revive domestic production, push companies to reshore supply chains, and weaken foreign competitors who gained unfair advantages through subsidies, labor exploitation, and currency manipulation.
Many U.S. manufacturers credited tariffs for leveling the playing field and reducing dependency on China.
Her speech reached peak absurdity when she argued that Trump “attacked Canada” and caused a bakery in New Hampshire with Canadian contracts to close.
But she made no mention of the U.S. industries that had been hollowed out for decades by foreign trade abuses, nor the communities devastated long before tariffs were implemented. Instead of advocating American jobs, Shaheen framed foreign trade partners—China included—as victims.
Shaheen closed by expressing hope that the Supreme Court will “quickly rule that these tariffs are unlawful,” claiming that eliminating them will “restore stability.”
In reality, removing tariffs would restore something else: America’s dangerous dependence on foreign manufacturing, especially China’s.
The Democrat Party once fought for factory workers and industrial towns.
Today, its senators stand on the steps of the Supreme Court demanding that the United States stop protecting its own industries.
Shaheen’s speech makes it clear: the modern Democrat Party isn’t just indifferent to American manufacturing—it is openly hostile to it.
