Representative Ilhan Omar delivered a defiant speech on November 24, 2025, asserting that “Somalis have always seen themselves as a fabric of this nation,” while condemning President Trump’s announcement to end Temporary Protected Status for Somalis in Minnesota. In her remarks, Omar emphasized that Somalis are contributing members of American society, stating that community members have “signed up to serve this country in its military,” to teach children, and to work as “nurses and doctors and engineers,” driven by love and gratitude for their new home.
Omar directly criticized Trump’s legal authority on the matter, declaring at the rally that “even little kids in 8th grade know that that is not an authority that the president has and can wield,” claiming that the Homeland Security Secretary—not the president—holds power over TPS designations. The failed congresswoman attempted to highlight the legal reasoning behind the president’s order, claiming that Trump cannot unilaterally terminate TPS for a single state, as the law requires any decision to apply nationally.
On social media platform X, Omar posted a defiant message responding to Trump’s Friday announcement, stating “I am a citizen and so are majority of Somalis in America. Good luck celebrating a policy change that really doesn’t have much impact on the Somalis you love to hate. We are here to stay.” Omar also addressed the president’s claims linking the Somali community to fraud and gang activity, stating there is “not a single evidence” supporting such allegations and warning that “that language puts the lives of Somali not only in Minnesota but across the country in danger.”
In another X post on November 25, Omar wrote to Somali communities, “To our Somali communities here in Minnesota and across the country: we see you and we stand with you. None of Trump’s lawless threats will ever change that you make our state and country great.” Omar condemned the broader pattern of demonization she said Trump engages in, comparing it to his campaign claims about immigrants “eating cats and dogs,” calling such rhetoric “shameful” and noting it causes the nation to be mocked globally.
Omar concluded her defiant remarks by stating emphatically: “We are not going to allow anybody to make us feel less Somali or less American. We are not going to allow anybody to push us into the shadows. We’re not going to allow anybody to erase our presence and our contribution.”
