Honduras Issues Arrest Warrant Against Former President Juan Orlando Hernandez Who Has Just Been Pardoned by Trump

Another South American country going conservative.
Honduras is living days of turmoil, as the presidential election’s vote count is stalled, and with political controversy circling a former president pardoned by US President Donald J. Trump.
Reuters reported:
“Honduras Attorney General Johel Antonio Zelaya on Monday issued an international arrest warrant for former president Juan Orlando Hernandez, he said in a post on X.
Hernandez was recently pardoned by U.S. President Donald Trump and released from prison where he was serving a 45-year sentence on drug trafficking charges.”

The move against Hernández came as the candidate from his party Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura — publicly backed by Trump — extended his lead in the country’s chaotic vote count as it nears completion.
Hernández was convicted and sentenced for 45 years in a US prison for drug trafficking.
Trump pardoned him two days before the election, saying he was set up by Joe Biden’s administration.
Financial Times reported:
“But the conservative ex-president, who is believed to still be in the US, faces money laundering and fraud charges at home. Attorney-general Johel Zelaya urged Interpol on Monday to act on a 2023 arrest warrant against him.
[…] Hernández, who allegedly bragged about stuffing cocaine ‘right up the noses of the gringos’, has fulsomely praised Trump. He maintains his innocence, and his lawyer, Renato Stabile, dismissed the Honduran arrest warrant as ‘a desperate piece of political theatre” and said the charges were ‘completely baseless’.”
The Honduran Presidential count resumes after a 3-day freeze.

“Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura, the National Party candidate — whom Trump has publicly backed — was almost 44,000 votes ahead, giving him 40.5 per cent of the total count with 99 per cent of ballots tallied.
Salvador Nasralla of the Liberal Party was at 39.2 per cent, but has said that he is the rightful winner and that the vote count was manipulated.”
