Saturday night, Indiana University quarterback Fernando Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy. He is a devout Catholic who incorporates daily Mass, the Rosary, and team Bible studies into his routine.

The first thing Mendoza did when he reached the podium to make remarks was to thank God.

“First, I want to thank God for giving me the opportunity to chase a dream that once seemed a world away.”

In his post-ceremony press conference, Mendoza spoke at length about his faith sharing, “My faith is a huge component and maybe the sole reason why I got here.”

“Building that faith throughout college and now to be able to share my faith with these amazing teammates and just the community of faith, realizing having God on my side, always praising Jesus Christ, it’s incredible. I can’t thank the man above enough.”

He emphasized how his spirituality has been central to his journey, from overcoming early doubts in football to leading Indiana to an undefeated season and Big Ten title.

Mendoza’s full Heisman speech closed with an inspiring message for young athletes.

“I want every kid out there who feels overlooked, underestimated, to know…I was you.”

“I was that kid too. I was in your shoes.”

“The truth is, you don’t need the most stars. hype, or rankings. You just need discipline, heart, and people who believe in you. And you need to believe in your own abilities.”

“I hope this moment shows you that chasing your dreams are worth it no matter how big or impossible they seem.”
