An elderly bus driver terminated earlier this year for posting a so-called ‘racially insensitive’ sign toward a Spanish-speaking kid has broken her silence and the DOJ is launching an investigation.

As CBS 21 reported, 66-year-old Diane Crawford was fired in February after posting what they called a ‘racially insensitive’ note on the window of the school bus Crawford was driving.

The note on the window read, “Out of respect to English-only students, there will be no speaking Spanish on this bus.”

Crawford, who had served the school district as a bus driver for more than 30 years, was promptly suspended and later lost her job posting the note.

She spoke to CBS 21 last week to tell her side of the story.

“I do care,” Crawford told CBS 21 while wiping tears from her eyes. “I care about a lot.”

The heart-broken former bus driver now says she does not know how she can make a living.

“I don’t know what else to do. I’m on Medicare and Medicaid now and SNAP,” she said while continuing to cry. “I had to go on antidepressants because of this.”

Crawford also insisted she did not have any racial animus toward the children.

“I didn’t mean to be racially insensitive or anything like that,” she explained before saying the sign was put up to encourage “safe and respectful” behavior.

Moreover, the sign was directed at a bilingual student who reportedly was a troublemaker.

“I didn’t know if he was bullying somebody, telling them to do something that they shouldn’t do,” Crawford said. “How do you keep control of your bus if you have no control.”

Crawford said she did not regret making the sign but said she could have worded it differently.

“Maybe I should have worded it (differently). Maybe it should have said, ‘No bullying in any language,’ but I didn’t mean it to be anything but to correct him,” she said.

The Juniata County School District and Rohrer Bus responded in a joint statement Thursday that the investigation had concluded quickly after Crawford admitted to installing the note.

Juniata County School District and Rohrer Bus Service are aware of the claims being raised regarding this matter and would like to clarify the record.

Following the incident in question, the District and Rohrer jointly reviewed the situation in accordance with established procedures. The investigation concluded after the subcontractor provided a written admission confirming that the signage had been installed on her bus.

At that point, the relevant facts of the situation were fully known and discussed among District and Rohrer leadership.

Based on those facts, and after careful consideration, the District and Rohrer determined that the conduct did not align with the standards and expectations for student transportation providers.

Crawford said she wants them to admit wrongdoing and $30,000 to help pay for the bus and the route she bought in 2024.

“I would like them to admit that they were wrong,” she stated. “I don’t want to be in debt because what they did was wrong.”

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dillion announced Sunday night she has directed the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice to investigate.

“This is deeply concerning. I have directed ⁦@CivilRights to open an investigation into this situation implicating DEI wokeness,” she wrote.
