War Room’s Steve Bannon talked with historian Larry Schweikart on Saturday about various topics, including Trump’s defining moment in 2015 as politics was changing. He also discussed the inadequacy of current history textbooks in schools, particularly on the American story.

Schweikert explained that he actually lost friends for supporting Trump’s candidacy in the early days.

“I lost some friends, or there’s a number of people I can’t discuss politics with on the right,” Schweikert said.

“A number of people, especially a lot of those at NRO that I used to correspond with, to me just simply went nuts,” Schweikert continued.

“Buckley’s National Review is not the National Review today. In fact, in the Spring and March of ’16, they put up the never Trump or against Trump,” Bannon explained.

“I was trying to convince them, look, all you have to do is look at the polling, look at the voter registration and you will see he is going to be the candidate,” Schweikert explained.

“They refused to believe that he was going to be the nominee. I said, no, easily he is gonna be the nominee,” Schweikert said.

“I came to understand that politics had changed a great deal from Ronald Reagan’s day to Donald Trump’s day,” Schweikert explained.

Schwikert had used various examples, including President Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan, each having been at the right place in history. Lincoln was successful at giving speeches, but his voice might not have worked for radio if the technology had existed. FDR was great for radio, and Ronald Reagan was perfect for television because he was polished and spoke very well.

“You couldn’t find a history text that you thought was unbiased enough to actually explain the American experience to your students,” Bannon said.

“You have to apply the law of significance. How many people does this affect over how much time. That’s what makes it significant,” Schweikert explained.
