Trump Makes Bold Pitch to Protect The U.S. Dollar — Will Impose 100 Percent Tariffs on Countries Joining Alternative Reserve Currency
Donald Trump is making a bold pitch to protect the United States Dollar.
The U.S. dollar is increasingly under threat as the global reserve currency due to rising debt and de-dollarisation efforts by the likes of China, Russia and other BRICS nations.
If the U.S. were to lose its status as the global reserve currency, this would likely lead to rising inflation, higher borrowing costs and a general loss of overall economic influence.
BRICS nations have floated the idea of creating their own alternative currency, a proposal that has gained significant traction in recent years.
However, Trump has no intention of letting this happen under his watch, as he explained in a post on Truth Social on Thursday evening.
He wrote:
The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar, while we stand by and watch, is OVER.
We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy.
They can go find another sucker Nation. There is no chance that BRICS will replace the U.S. Dollar in International Trade, or anywhere else, and any Country that tries should say hello to Tariffs, and goodbye to America!
Originally comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, BRICS expanded in 2024 by inviting Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia to join the organization with the aim of strengthening their economic and geopolitical influence.
Central to this expansion has been the idea of conducting trade in local currencies rather than the U.S. dollar, as well as expanding their control over global energy markets in order to gain greater influence of the U.S. and Europe.
Meanwhile, Trump’s tariff plans have already proven successful within his first in office.
Last weekend, he threatened to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on Colombia if the country’s communist president Gustavo Petro did not agree to accept deportation flights of illegal aliens.
After Petro initially pledged to impose retaliatory tariffs, he eventually backed down after realizing that Colombia was far more dependent on America than vice versa.
