Today is a historic day.
It will either pass into history as a landmark into a new path for peace between the nuclear superpowers, or else it will be remembered as a day of missed opportunities.
US President Donald J. Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will meet for groundbreaking talks – about the Ukraine war, and about new economic cooperation.

The meetings will take place at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base, in Anchorage, Alaska.
To begin with, Alaska is the place where US and Russia ‘meet’ – in fact, the US Little Diomede Island and the Russian Big Diomede are only 2.4 miles apart.
But the exact site of the meeting is also symbolic, because next to the Elmendorf-Richardson base there is a memorial cemetery where nine Soviet pilots are buried who died in operations during the Second World War, when the US and Russia were allies.
Russian aide Ushakov: ‘Holding talks near a historically important site that reminds us of the brotherhood in arms is especially symbolic in the year of the 80th anniversary of [our] Victory’.

Trump reveals that there will be a second meeting, with Zelensky and potentially some European leaders as well.
This meeting with Putin in Alaska is a preliminary meeting before the big summit, and hopefully, the end of this war.

The US delegation has not been officially named, but multiple sources on X and Telegram say it will consist of President Donald J. Trump, Vice-President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
The Russian delegation will consist of President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Policy Advisor Yuri Ushakov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, Economic Representative Kirill Dmitriev.
Two heavyweight delegations, filled with officials with an economic background – even the Russian Defense minister Belousov is an economist by trade.

The meeting will start at 11am Alaska time (3pm EDT) with a ‘one-on-one’ meeting of Trump and Putin, followed by a ‘five-on-five’ inter-delegation meeting.
A joint lunch is planned, so the delegations will ‘break bread’ together.
After the discussions, is expected that Putin and Trump will hold a joint press conference.
While a resolution for the Ukrainian war is the primary topic, bilateral economic cooperation and global security will also be addressed.
