EU’s Globalist Leaders “Harbor Profound Distrust” of Trump’s Peace Efforts, Germany’s Mainstream Press Says

Europe’s globalist leaders—most of whom come from political parties that are in terminal decline—are growing uneasy that the United States, under President Trump, might reach a Ukraine settlement that leaves Brussels on the sidelines.
Reports from mainstream press outlets in Germany suggest several heads of government now worry Washington could very well agree to terms Kyiv would find painful.
According to a leaked transcript obtained by German media, senior EU figures openly admitted they “harbor profound distrust of” Washington’s efforts to broker an end to nearly four years of bloody inter-Slavic conflict in Ukraine.
During a recent conference call, President Macron reportedly warned that any deal lacking strong security guarantees could force Ukraine to make territorial concessions. He added that an early peace agreement might actually endanger President Zelensky’s political position at home.
“There is a possibility that the US will betray Ukraine on the issue of territory without clarity regarding security guarantees,” Macron is said to have said during the call.
German Chancellor Merz, Finnish President Stubb, and several other participants appeared to share that concern. They fear an abrupt end to the fighting could remove the emergency powers Zelensky has relied on since 2022.
The call took place just before Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow for direct talks with President Putin. European governments had hoped to meet the American delegation in Brussels the following day, but the meeting never happened.
Several leaders expressed frustration that Europe currently has no formal role in the emerging negotiations. One participant was quoted saying Europe is effectively “out” of the process and urgently needs to find a way back in.
Russia has pointed out that EU governments themselves cut off high-level contacts with Moscow years ago. Kremlin officials say Brussels cannot now complain about exclusion when it refused dialogue for so long. Hungary and Slovakia are the only EU countries who’ve attempted to maintain some sort of a dialogue amid the bloodshed.
European capitals rejected earlier American proposals that included territorial adjustments in eastern Ukraine. They insisted that no Ukrainian land should be ceded under any circumstances.
Some deeply out-of-touch EU governments still naively hope for a complete Russian withdrawal and reparations. Moscow, however, describes that goal as detached from battlefield realities.
Putin stated this week that Europe appears to lack a genuine peace agenda of its own. He suggested the continent remains focused on Russia’s strategic defeat rather than a workable compromise
The tension between the national-populist, pro-peace Trump administration and EU pro-war globalists is very clear. European leaders want influence over any settlement but have limited leverage at the moment. Washington, by contrast, is moving quickly and speaking directly to both sides.
Ordinary Europeans continue to bear high energy costs and inflation linked to the war and sanctions.
Many now question whether their governments should accept a negotiated end to the fighting rather than continuing to pour billions of euros into a project that has failed.
