The pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil is expected to be re-detained and deported to Algeria, the Department of Homeland Security has announced.

The Trump administration has long sought his removal over his role in organizing the pro-Palestinian riots at Columbia University.

Khalil has fought the move in court for months, arguing that deportation would somehow violate constitutional protections for permanent residents.

That effort suffered a setback last week when a federal appeals court reversed a lower court ruling that had secured his release from immigration detention.

“It looks like he’ll go to Algeria. That’s what the thought is right now,” said Tricia McLaughlin, DHS assistant secretary for public affairs, speaking on Katie Pavlich Tonight.

McLaughlin said the case carried a broader message for non-citizens.

“It’s a reminder for those who are in this country on a visa or on a green card,” she continued. You are a guest in this country — act like it.”

“It is a privilege, not a right, to be in this country to live or to study.”

Last week, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2–1 to overturn a previous order that freed Khalil from custody.

He was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in March last year.

His detention marked the first campus arrest linked to the Trump administration’s crackdown on foreign nationals involved in far-left activism.

The administration maintains that Khalil supports Hamas, a designated terrorist organization, and provided false information during his permanent residency application.

Speaking at a rally in June, Khalil described himself as a “freedom fighter”

“Who is Mahmoud Khalil? … Mahmoud Khalil is a human rights defender. Mahmoud Khalil is a freedom fighter.

“Mahmoud Khalil is a refugee. Mahmoud Khalil is a father and husband, and above all, Mahmoud Khalil is Palestinian.”

Khalil has filed a $20 million claim against the Trump administration, accusing them of false imprisonment and malicious prosecution.
